Penumbra This project called Penumbra was made during 2001/2002 and consists of handmade c-prints and a book with the above mentioned title. Within these images I mix documentary and fiction, staging scenes to try and build up a certain tension, to create a feeling of something that is not revealed or implicitly told. I show glimpses of different stories, where something is left unsaid and the viewer is forced to create his own particular narrative. My images are ambiguous and the narrative they contain is multi-directional. I use devices such as footprints in the snow, a road in the landscape or a house with glowing windows as emotive motifs in order to sustain this approach. I photographed people together with landscape mostly in Norway , because of the light and the openness of the landscape and the ambiguity this implies. The pictures are mostly created in the evening and I use darkness to strengthen then feeling of the “untold”. Even though I shoot single frames and each photograph tells its own story, they might also be viewed as a whole – forming a bigger narrative. In this sense the viewing experience has similarities with pluralistic narrative film – the images show glimpses of stories that can be linked together to a greater whole depending on the viewer.
Project 2 This project consists of images shot during my travels in the latest years. It is still not finished, but is using the same ideas as in the Penumbra project, |
